VCAT has approved the permit for the gallery to go ahead at the site of 559 Main Road Eltham, former home of the Eltham Wiregrass & Gateway Galleries. This is a great win for the continuation of the Arts in Eltham. The new design for the gallery will incorporate the quintesential building elements of the district - mudbrick and timbers.

The permit had presiously been refused by the Nillumbik Council and had been objected to by some Nillumbik residents who felt car parking was a larger issue than the furtherment of the arts and architecture in Eltham. This iconic building designed by the quintesential mudbrick architects of Eltham will enhance the Gateway, foster the arts and help perpetuate the reputation of Eltham as a place for art.

What this means for Gateway Galleries

The owner/gallery applicants will now be persuing final plans for the new gallery they intend to build at 559 Main Road Eltham.

Gateway Galleries is an entity created by Jenni Mitchell to help the applicants in their persuit of a planning permit. The name Gateway Galleries will be continued as a gallery, art school and framing business representiang several artists.

No decisions have been made at this time for housing Gateway Galleries in the new building These decisions will be discussed during the forthcoming time.

Any enquiries about the work of the artists previously represented by Gateway Galleries can be made to Jenni Mitchell.

The VCAT hearing was held the first week of November and we await the outcome of a decision as to the future of the gallery site at 559 Main Road Eltham.

Gateway Galleries will continue representing the work of Jenni Mitchell & Mervyn Hannan from their studio at Montsalvat in Eltham.
